The Basics of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu also widely known as BJJ is a popular self defence program and a combat sport that is based on the idea that a weak person can easily defend himself/herself from a much stronger opponent by using proper technique and timing. The sport was developed in 1920s in Brazil and over the years it gained wide popularity in the US and around the world as more and more international MMA tournaments were held during the 1990s.

BJJ is often considered as a sport that is primarily based on grappling or ground fighting but in reality is a comprehensive self-defence system that helps you to safeguard yourself from any unexpected attack even from a much stronger and aggressive opponent. Today, owing to the growing popularity of the sport, a large number of people are enrolling into various sports academies to learn the art. People are learning the sport mainly as a form of self defence or improve general physical fitness.

One of the best things about this sport is that it is suitable for people of all ages and sexes; everybody from kids to old aged people can participate in it. The basic ideology of applying technique rather than using sheer power turns the energy of your opponents attack in your favour. While practicing the various training drills you learn to control a hostile situation and avoid getting injured.

The rules of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are pretty complex and usually different tournaments have different rules. However, the main idea of winning is to earn points by advancing your position. In the tournament matches the fight is instantly stopped if any of the participants gives up by tapping out due to the dominant position of the opponent or a joint lock submission.

BJJ is a wonderful sport for kids as it doesn't have any risk. One of the best things about this sport is that it doesn't involve kicks. It is also helpful to inculcate various virtues like discipline, determination and perseverance. Not to mention, it is a fun way to provide full body work and improve the fitness and stamina levels of children. The various body moves practiced during the training not only strengthens the core muscles but also increases their flexibility.

Apart from the physical benefits, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu also has a positive psychological benefit. The sport teaches them not to give up even during difficult times and find a solution to the problem by remaining calm and maintaining a positive attitude. Enrolling your kids for BJJ training at a young age can have a significant impact in their later life.
